Volunteering with young people in Salvador, Brazil, is a rich, vibrant experience in a unique culture...

Volunteers in this project in a coastal village north of Salvador, Bahia, will work for a month teaching English to teenagers around the theme of the Living Seas. Volunteers will encourage adolescents to develop social responsibility by understanding and appreciating the importance of the oceans to their local community, and through that to the wider world. At the end of the module, the volunteer will help participants present a show to the local community.

The volunteering work will take place on weekends. There is some flexibility as to the length of time spent on this project – it would be possible to design a two or three month module instead of a month.

All of our volunteer placements are tailor made.  Costs will vary according to the level of accommodation volunteers require and the preferred length of placement.  As a guideline, our charges for a 4-week placement in the hostel in Praia de Forte will start at £1,550.

Duration of Stay

Ideally 4 weeks but placements can be designed for as little as 2 weeks up to a maximum of 3 months.

Volunteers will live in a very pleasant airy hostel with generously sized, en suite rooms. For an extra cost, we can arrange for volunteers to stay in a small local hotel.

What is Included

Our charges include accommodation in the hostel, breakfast, lunch when working in the placement, transfers from the airport to your accommodation while on the orientation course in the initial arrival city, 2 day orientation course in Brazil, pre-departure briefing in London, placement management and supervision, transfer from arrival in Salvador to placement, local orientation, project contribution, the services of our expert local Representative.

What is Not Included

Volunteers' airfares, travel costs between the city of arrival in Brazil and location of the placement, travel to the airport in UK, insurance, any visa costs, inoculations, personal expenses such as phone calls, travel, meals other than those specified above.

Support for the Project

BVB will ensure part of your charge is spent in Brazil for the direct benefit of our projects there.  Again, the amount will vary according to each volunteer's placement duration but will never be less than £200.00.  Volunteers will be fully involved in the decision on where the contribution will be spent.

This area of Brazil is rich in history and cultural traditions. Volunteers can take classes in capoeira, learn about the history of slavery and its legacy, participate in drumming workshops, sample Bahian cookery, learn local dances and take courses on Brazilian music and its traditions. Volunteers can go whale watching, visit the spectacular national park where diamonds were mined, join in or watch candoble, the local voodoo religion, or simply walk miles of unspoilt beaches. We can arrange trips to points of special interest in the North East, such as Fernando de Noronha or Morro de São Paulo.
